BUILDING LIFE SKILLS

Our approach to foster care transition is based on recovery principals and are not based on a temporary “fix.”
One of the goals of recovery is to help you keep what you worked so hard to obtain.

River Jordan’s program models are designed for the enrollee to retain the progress they have made long-term, whether it be healthy relationships, holding down a steady job until a better opportunity comes along, staying on track with career and education goals, or building on life and social skills without self-sabotaging. Enrollee's work with Life Skills Coordinators to evaluate past ways of thinking, behavior patterns, anxieties, and fears that have brought their success to a pause or stop in the past and work together to determine the best way to overcome them.

EDUCATION & EMPLOYMENT
Education can set the foundation for an individual to determine what path they may want to take with their life. If an enrollee does not have their high school diploma or GED equivalent, River Jordan aims to help enrollees find an educational program that best suits their goals. If a high school diploma or GED has already been attained, River Jordan can assist individuals to develop an action plan if further education is desired.

At River Jordan, we not only help you learn how to get a job, we help you learn how to be a good employee so that you can maintain that job. We help you learn how to read your paychecks and stubs, how to budget your money, open a bank account, and form a savings plan that works for you.

STABLE HOUSING:
Transitioning out of foster care can provide many new challenges such as access to safe and stable housing. River Jordan offers transitional living for youth age 18 to 21. Transitional living serves to help youth develop life skills through sharing a house and community space with other youth in transition. River Jordan's men's transitional house is currently open and accepting applications. The women's transitional house will be opening by the end of 2020 and is currently accepting applications. If transitional living is not desired, River Jordan can help foster youth to find an apartment within their budget, gather items to furnish it, and learn life skills of how to maintain it.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS:
In addition to helping foster youth become productive members of society, River Jordan programs and services help enrollees learn how to build healthy relationship skills within their community. Building a strong recovery foundation is crucial when transitioning out of foster care and takes time. Community connections can provide opportunities for enrollees to better attain employment, education, and support services.

PEER SUPPORT:

No matter how old you are, most everyone who have experienced abuse and neglect never just “get over it” as people who have never been through it might expect them to. Recovering from foster care and the trauma associated with that experience takes time. For most, it is a lifelong process that requires weekly and sometimes daily maintenance.

River Jordan provides wrap-around coaching services for anyone who has experienced foster care. We seek to help and link foster care alumni to resources that will help them overcome PTSD, anxiety, depression and other disorders that hinder them in reaching life goals and prevents them from an improved quality of life.
